Back Country Roads and Walking with Fireflies on a Full Moon
Under the Full Moon in Aquarius, walking along backroads with no particular destination in mind—just the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other, letting the rhythm of my steps match the slowing of my breath.
At first, the quiet may feel heavy. I found my mind still carrying the noise of the day—emails unanswered, tasks unfinished, the endless loop of doing. But the back roads have a way of coaxing you into presence. The gravel crunched beneath your feet. A breeze moves through the pines, and you can catch the faint sweetness of wild bergamot blooming along the fence line.
When the sun begins its slow retreat--the symphony begins.
The crickets tune their instruments first—a gentle, pulsing hum that feel as though they are rising from the earth itself. The katydids join on in, with their scratchy calls weaving through into the chorus. Somewhere deep in the woods, an owl called, low and steady, as if keeping time. And then, as if on cue, the lightning bugs emerge. And oh so do my smile. Memories…sweet memories. I stopped walking and just watched.
They rose from the tall grass like tiny beautiful bright lanterns lifted by invisible hands—first one, then a dozen. Their light flickering in a syncopated rhythm that feels less like biology and more like a secret language. They dance above the wildflowers, tracing loops and spirals against the deepening dark blue of the sky.
In that moment, I wasn't a business owner, a writer, or a maker. I wasn't thinking about the book launch or the workshop or the tinctures waiting to be bottled. I was simply a woman standing on a country back road, watching the fireflies dance, listening to the earth sing its evening song.
A Simple Walking Meditation
If you find yourself needing to slow down—truly slow down—I invite you to try this simple walking meditation. No special equipment required. No expectations. Just you and the path ahead.
Begin with intention. Before you take your first step, place your feet firmly on the ground. Take three deep breaths. Say to yourself: I am here. I am present. I am enough.
Walk slowly. Let your steps be unhurried. Feel the ground beneath you—the firmness of the earth, the texture of the path, the subtle shift of weight from heel to toe.
Tune your senses. What do you hear? What do you smell? What do you see that you might have missed if you were rushing? Let each sense take its turn.
Return to your breath. When your mind wanders—and it will—gently bring your attention back to the rhythm of your inhale and exhale. Let your breath be your anchor.
End with gratitude. When your walk is complete, pause. Thank the earth beneath you, the air around you, and the body that carried you.
Just five or ten minutes of this practice can shift your entire day. It's not about escaping your responsibilities. It's about returning to them with a fuller heart and a clearer mind.
Pre-Order Stitching the Sun
This walking meditation, like so many of the stories I share, is part of the world of Stitching the Sun—my new book now available for pre-order.
Stitching the Sun weaves together stories of resilience, herbal wisdom, and the sacred art of tending both land and spirit. It honors the Appalachian and Southern roots that have shaped me, the healing traditions passed down through my family, and the quiet power of rising rooted in who we are.
Every page is stitched with intention—just like the quilts of the grandmothers who came before me, who told stories through thread and taught us that even in the hardest seasons, the sun still rises.
