Unveiling "The Granddaughters of Hathor"

The title piece, The Granddaughters of Hathor, is a profound mixed-media tapestry that reconnects the Black feminine divine with its ancient, cosmic roots.

In Egyptian mythology, Hathor was the goddess of the sky, women, love, and joy—a celestial mother whose tears were said to form the rivers of the world. My work reclaims this narrative, envisioning a lineage where every Black woman is a direct descendant of this divine power and creativity.

The piece is a stunning fusion of Conya’s signature practices:

  • Embroidery & Quilting: Hand-stitched patterns that map constellations and river systems onto fabric, echoing the teachings of her grandmother Geraldine and generations of Appalachian quilters who told stories through thread.

  • Herbal Alchemy: Natural dyes and pigments sourced from the very land her family has stewarded for over a century in Bedford, VA—walnut hulls, goldenrod, and sacred tobacco—infusing the work with the spirit of the earth.

  • Afrofuturist Vision: The work depicts figures adorned in garments that blend traditional West African textile motifs with the sleek elegance of Art Deco, imagining a future where this divine lineage is not just remembered, but fully realized.

This piece asks a vital question: What if we moved through the world knowing, in our very cells, that we are descendants of goddesses?

A Conversation Between Past and Future

"The Granddaughters of Hathor" is a testament to the core of what we do at Stitch & Soul: weaving heritage into tomorrow.

It draws a direct line from the quilting circles of rural Virginia to the cosmic throne of an Egyptian goddess, affirming that our artistry has always been magical, our medicine has always been powerful, and our stories have always been eternal.

My work reminds us that our creativity is our birthright. Every stitch we take, every plant we gather, every story we tell is an act of remembering who we truly are.

If you find yourself in Seattle between now and the end of November 2025, I cannot encourage you enough to make a pilgrimage to Arte Noir. Stand before this work. Feel the energy of the earth pigments and the intention in every stitch. Let it remind you of your own divine power.
