Living in Rhythm with the Seasons
There’s a rhythm to the earth—a quiet, steady pulse that guides the turning of the wheel. It’s in the way the sun rises and sets, the way the seasons shift, and the way the soil breathes life into every seed. When we align with that rhythm, something shifts within us, too. We begin to remember what our ancestors always knew: that healing, growth, and true abundance come when we live in partnership with the natural world.
Welcome back to Rising Rooted Yoga & Herbal Apothecary. I’m Conya Gilmore—herbalist, author, and student of the earth. Today, we’re exploring what it means to live in rhythm with the seasons—and how you can begin your own journey with two companions by your side: my ebook From Seeds to Harvest and my book Beauty By The Seasons.
🌱 What Does It Mean to Live in Rhythm with the Seasons?
Living seasonally isn’t just about planting a garden when the weather warms up. It’s about listening—to the land, to the plants, and to your own body. It’s about recognizing that just as the earth moves through cycles of growth, rest, and renewal, so do we.
Gardening isn’t just about planting and harvesting—it’s about understanding nature’s rhythms and learning how to work with the seasons to grow a healthy, vibrant garden. When we follow nature’s calendar, we create landscapes and lives that are as beautiful to nature as they are to us.
Our ancestors understood this intimately. They planted by the moon, harvested with the seasons, and knew that sustainability begins by listening to nature’s steady beat. This wisdom is woven into the very fabric of who we are—and it’s waiting to be reclaimed.
🌿 The Seasonal Cycle: A Guide for the Rooted Gardener
Each season offers its own gifts, challenges, and invitations. Here’s a glimpse into what it looks like to garden—and live—in rhythm with the wheel of the year.
🌸 Spring: Planting, Planning, and Renewal
Spring is the season of possibility. The soil begins to warm, the days grow longer, and the earth stirs with new life. This is the time to plan your garden, start seeds indoors, and prepare your beds for the abundance to come.
What to do in spring:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost
Prepare garden beds with compost and organic matter
Direct sow hardy herbs like calendula and chamomile
Dream—what do you want to grow this year?
Spring reminds us that every ending is really a beginning. It’s a season of hope, intention, and fresh starts.
☀️ Summer: Growth, Abundance, and Harvest
Summer is the season of fullness. The garden is alive with color, fragrance, and flavor. This is the time to tend, water, and harvest—to gather the gifts the earth has been preparing since spring.
What to do in summer:
Harvest herbs in the morning after the dew has dried
Dry and preserve your bounty for the months ahead
Observe—watch how the plants respond to the heat
Enjoy the fruits of your labor—fresh teas, salves, and meals
Summer teaches us to be present, to savor, and to receive.
🍂 Autumn: Gathering, Preserving, and Giving Thanks
Autumn is the season of harvest and gratitude. The garden begins to slow down, and we gather the last of what the earth has offered. This is the time to dry herbs, make tinctures, and store your harvest for the winter months.
What to do in autumn:
Harvest roots like echinacea and dandelion
Make healing salves and infused oils
Save seeds for next year’s garden
Give thanks—for the food, the medicine, and the wisdom of the land
Autumn invites us to reflect, to harvest not just from the garden but from our own lives.
❄️ Winter: Rest, Reflection, and Dreaming
Winter is the season of stillness. The garden rests beneath a blanket of snow, and so should we. This is the time to plan, study, and dream of what’s to come.
What to do in winter:
Study herbalism—read, learn, and deepen your knowledge
Plan next year’s garden—order seeds, sketch layouts
Tend your inner garden—journal, meditate, rest
Trust that the quiet holds its own kind of magic
Winter teaches us that rest is not emptiness—it is preparation.
🌻 The Wisdom of Our Ancestors
This cyclical way of living is not new. It is ancient. It is the inheritance of our ancestors—Black, Indigenous, and African peoples who lived in deep relationship with the land. Long before European colonization, African peoples traveled to the Americas, bringing with them profound knowledge of plant medicine. Indigenous peoples, too, carried generations of botanical wisdom. And when their knowledge converged—in the Appalachian mountains, the Virginia Piedmont, and the Chesapeake Bay—a powerful tradition of healing was born.
At Rising Rooted, we honor this legacy. We believe that gardening is more than a pastime—it is a deeply rooted practice that connects us to the wisdom of our ancestors, the cycles of nature, and the quiet whispers of our own souls.

As I write in Beauty By The Seasons, “The soil is alive, and when we care for it, it cares for us in return”. And as I share in the same book, “The garden teaches us patience and presence, reminding us to slow down and savor the moment”.
🌿 A Final Invitation
Living in rhythm with the seasons isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s about showing up, day by day, and trusting that the earth knows what to do—and so do you.
As the poet and farmer Wendell Berry once wrote, “The earth is what we all have in common.” When we tend the earth, we tend ourselves. When we grow with the seasons, we grow into who we were always meant to be.
